Chefs des compagnies de mercenaires, se mettant, par contrat (condotta ), au service des princes ou des villes. Petits seigneurs, tels Federico da Montefeltro ou Ercole d’Este, ou bien vieux soldats d’origine modeste, tels Attendolo Sforza, fils de paysans, ou Gattamelata, fils de boulanger, les condottieri recrutent et payent leurs propres hommes, sur lesquels ils exercent un pouvoir illimité. Ils allient courage et fermeté, ruse et prudence, vaine ostentation et goût des arts. Leur seul but est de s’élever, en profitant des luttes urbaines qui déchirent l’Italie, pour se tailler une seigneurie, voire une principauté (François Sforza, duc de Milan en 1450). Pour ce faire, ils interviennent constamment dans les guerres qui opposent Aragonais et Angevins, Visconti et républiques de Venise et de Florence. S’ils ont contribué aux progrès de l’art militaire (stratégie, artillerie), leurs ambitions concurrentes et leur soif de combattre ont provoqué l’épuisement des forces militaires et politiques italiennes, comme l’a noté Machiavel.
